Toyota has revealed more details about the GR GT, and the Japanese automaker’s upcoming flagship is shaping up to be far more than just another high-performance sports car.
With a twin-turbocharged V8, hybrid assistance, rear-wheel drive, carbon-ceramic brakes, and a direct connection to a purpose-built GT3 race car, the GR GT represents one of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s most ambitious projects yet.
For a company responsible for icons such as the 2000GT, Supra, and Lexus LFA, expectations are understandably high.
And based on the latest details revealed during Monterey Car Week, the GR GT appears to have been engineered with one clear objective: to bring race-car thinking to a road-legal Toyota.
A Twin-Turbo V8 With Hybrid Power
At the heart of the GR GT is a newly developed 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with dry-sump lubrication.
Toyota pairs that engine with a hybrid system featuring an electric motor integrated into the rear transaxle. The current development target is at least 641 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, or approximately 627 lb-ft.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota is targeting a top speed of at least 199 mph, putting the GR GT firmly into supercar territory.
But the GR GT’s hybrid system is not simply there to improve fuel economy.
According to details revealed about the car’s engineering, the electric motor plays a supporting role in the powertrain and drivetrain, while the overall layout has been designed to improve responsiveness and driving performance.
Built Like a Road-Legal Race Car
Toyota describes the GR GT as a road-legal race car, and the engineering supports that claim.
The car uses a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with the transmission positioned at the rear in a transaxle configuration. Toyota has also targeted a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution, helping place more weight over the driven wheels.
The GR GT’s chassis is equally ambitious.
It features Toyota’s first all-aluminum body frame, designed to combine low weight with high rigidity. The prototype’s target weight is 1,750 kg or less, while the suspension uses a double-wishbone setup at both the front and rear.
Stopping power comes from carbon-ceramic brakes, while the GR GT rides on staggered 20-inch wheels with 265/35ZR20 tires at the front and 325/30ZR20 tires at the rear.
This is clearly not a Supra replacement.
Toyota is aiming much higher.
The GR GT and GR GT3 Share the Same DNA
One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the connection between the road car and its racing counterpart.
Toyota is developing the GR GT3 alongside the production-oriented GR GT, and recent reports indicate that the two versions share roughly 80 percent of their components.
That is a significant departure from the traditional approach of taking a production car and heavily modifying it for racing.
Instead, the GR GT project appears to have been developed with motorsport engineering built into its DNA from the beginning.
The GT3 version will naturally feature significant aerodynamic and competition-specific changes, but the connection between the two cars could make the GR GT one of the closest things Toyota has produced to a genuine race car with license plates.
For JDM and motorsport enthusiasts, that might be the most exciting part of the entire project.
A Small Piece of Toyota Performance History
Toyota’s new flagship may be out of reach for most enthusiasts, but the brand’s performance heritage is not.

Toyota Doesn’t Want the GR GT to Become a Garage Trophy
The GR GT is expected to be a rare car, and demand is already extremely high.
Reports from Monterey Car Week indicate that Toyota’s first allocation for the United States has already been spoken for, with approximately 200 to 250 cars expected for the U.S. market.
Toyota has also indicated that it wants the cars to go to genuine enthusiasts rather than buyers planning to immediately resell them for profit.
That approach fits the philosophy behind the car.
The GR GT was developed around driving performance, durability, and motorsport-inspired engineering. Toyota appears to want owners who will actually use the car rather than simply storing it as an investment.
Could This Become Toyota’s Next Legendary Supercar?
The Toyota GR GT has some extremely big shoes to fill.
The Toyota 2000GT became one of the most important Japanese sports cars in history. The Lexus LFA earned legendary status thanks to its engineering, sound, and limited production.
The Supra became a global tuning icon.
The GR GT now enters that same conversation—but with a completely different mission.
It combines a modern twin-turbo V8, hybrid technology, a lightweight aluminum structure, rear-wheel drive, and engineering developed alongside a GT3 race car.
Toyota is still refining the final product, with development continuing toward its planned launch around 2027. Some specifications may therefore change before production begins.
But one thing is already clear.
The GR GT is not Toyota playing it safe.
In an era where many manufacturers are moving away from large internal-combustion engines, Toyota is preparing to launch a flagship performance machine powered by a twin-turbocharged V8—and pairing it with hybrid technology rather than replacing the engine entirely.
